This stunning, 100% cotton cushion cover is hand embroidered with a tree of life motif, peacocks, birds and red, yellow and blue flowers, it closes with three buttons and is finished with a flax yellow binding and matching tassels in each corner. The front panel of these cushions is hand woven and the back is market bought. Each cushion takes three days to embroider. The embroidery techniques used are over a thousand years old, they are based on the practices of the Kathiawadi desert nomads and are being kept alive by the Gujarati artisans of St Mary’s Mahila Shikshan Kendra, one of our fair trade partners in India. The traditional Kathiawadi style of embroidery and mirror work is preserved through St Mary’s work with talented traditional artisans in the west Indian city of Ahmedabad. Women from all religious beliefs unite within this group to collaborate on the creation of high quality work, bringing about economic independence and learning leadership skills.
